Repairs to preserve Southend Pier continues
1 February 2010

Preservation Treatments (PTL) are proud to be associated with the continuing restoration works being carried out at Southend’s international iconic pier.

The Grade ll listed building which dates back to 1830 and is the longest pier in Europe at 1.341 miles is a true survivor of fires, boat crashes, two world wars and economic decline but Southend Council are committed to ensuring that the benefits of a brisk walk along the Pier enjoying the Southend sea air and a pier train ride will again be shortly open to all.

The timbers forming part of the walkway ramp at the shore end of the pier were found to be in dire need of protection against the ravages of wood rot and PTL’s technicians were called in by Pavehall plc the Council’s contractors to carry out specialist timber preservation work to ensure the longevity of the restoration work.

The timber joists which could be left insitu were spray coated with an application of Probor DB to the ends and up to one meter along their length. The treatment, which is ideal for use in such high risk areas, is capable of penetrating to the core of the timbers thus providing long term integrity.

Preservation Treatments (Surrey) Limited together with its sister company DWC Contractors & Surveyors provided the necessary specialist technical expertise to Pavehall plc, which are the appointed principal contractors carrying out the remainder of the restoration works to the pier.
